Depending on the intention of employing ambiguity in different types of discourse, one can identify several subtypes of ambiguity – strategic, constructive, destructive and manipulative. Broadly speaking, any kind of intended ambiguity can be considered manipulative since the speaker when generating an utterance aims at achieving a particular goal or effect. Strategic ambiguity can be defined as a deliberate choice of words or language structures allowing the freedom to alter interpretations, which, however, may produce a positive effect. Manipulative ambiguity is aimed at gaining control or achieving a goal, which is not morally right or otherwise correct. By opting for an ambiguous word or an ambiguous communicative strategy, the speaker diverts the recipient’s attention from the true meaning of a statement. Manipulative ambiguity is associated with a number of related concepts – doublespeak, newspeak and unspeak, which are widely used in political, diplomatic and media discourse. All strategies and techniques of achieving intended ambiguity create an opportunity for manipulating public opinion since they provide several reference points. The multiplicity of reference points for the formation of a judgment creates conditions for generating ambiguity.", booktitle = "6th SWS International Scientific Conference on Arts and Humanities ISCAH 2019", chapter = "ART {\&} HUMANITIES: Section Language {\&} Linguistics", doi = "10.5593/SWS.ISCAH.2019.1/S14.076", isbn = "978-619-7408-90-4", issn = "2682-9940", keywords = "ambiguity; manipulation; intention; constructive; destructive", month = "26 August – 1 September, 2019", note = "6th SWS International Scientific Conference on Arts and Humanities ISCAH 2019, 26 August – 1 September, 2019", number = "1", organization = "Bulgarian Acad Sci; Acad Sci Czech Republ; Latvian Acad Sci; Polish Acad Sci; Russian Acad Sci; Serbian Acad Sci {\&} Arts; Slovak Acad Sci; Natl Acad Sci Ukraine; Natl Acad Sci Armenia; Sci Council Japan; World Acad Sci; European Acad Sci, Arts {\&} Letters; Ac", pages = "601-606", publisher = "STEF92 Technology", series = "SWS International Scientific Conference on Arts and Humanities - ISCAH", title = "{AMBIGUITY}: {MANIPULATIVE} {OR} {CONSTRUCTIVE}?", type = "Proceedings Paper", url = "https://www.sgemsocial.org/index.php/jresearch-article?citekey=Boyarskaya201914601606", volume = "6", year = "2019", }
