We have conducted a cross-sectional study on patients with occupational lung disease, referred to the hospital for their annual evaluation. The exclusion criteria were the presence of an acute disease, the presence of the exacerbation of the lung disease and a severe deterioration of the lung function. Beside the regular clinical and functional evaluation, Saint George Questionnaire was used for the quality of life and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for the anxiety level assessment. Data were processed using a STATPlus for Mac software, version 6.1.7.0. We found a high prevalence of anxiety (54%), with a high Pearson correlation between anxiety score and the symptoms score (R = 0.39, p <0.05), the activity score (R = 0.39, p <0.05) and the impact score (R = 0.38, p <0.05), respectively. The average symptoms score was significantly higher (65.91 vs. 52.49) in the high anxiety group, with similar differences observed in the activity score (56.52 vs. 37.56) and in the impact score (39.64 vs. 28.48). There was no correlation of the anxiety score and the lung function values (% of the vital capacity from reference, % of forced expiratory flow in the first second from reference or FEF1/VC). Comorbidities prevalence was similar in the low and in the high anxiety group (chi square = 35.02, p >0.05). In conclusion, the occupational lung diseases were associated with a high anxiety score, independent of the lung function impairment. A high anxiety score is related to a significant reduction in the perceived quality of life.", address = "51 Alexander Malinov blvd, Sofia, 1712, Bulgaria", booktitle = "5th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference on Social Sciences and Arts SGEM 2018", chapter = "SOCIAL SCIENCES: Section Sociology and Social Work", doi = "10.5593/sgemsocial2018/3.3/S12.004", isbn = "978-619-7408-55-3", issn = "2367-5659", keywords = "occupational lung diseases; anxiety; comorbidities; lung function", month = "26 August – 01 September, 2018", note = "5th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference on Social Sciences and Arts SGEM 2018, 26 August – 01 September, 2018", number = "3.3", organization = "Bulgarian Acad Sci; Acad Sci Czech Republ; Latvian Acad Sci; Polish Acad Sci; Russian Acad Sci; Serbian Acad Sci {\&} Arts; Slovak Acad Sci; Natl Acad Sci Ukraine; Natl Acad Sci Armenia; Sci Council Japan; World Acad Sci; European Acad Sci, Arts {\&} Letters; Ac", pages = "27-34", publisher = "STEF92 Technology", series = "International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference on Social Sciences and Arts-SGEM", title = "{ANXIETY} {SCORES} {IN} {OCCUPATIONAL} {LUNG} {DISEASES}", type = "Proceedings Paper", url = "https://www.sgemsocial.org/index.php/jresearch-article?citekey=Rascu2018122734", volume = "18", year = "2018", }
