- Abstract:
- Educational tourism, one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors in the world, can be developed in different areas that are characterised by accessibility and possess educational tourism resources. In order to efficiently invest in educational tourism, it is necessary to take into account economic peculiarities of a certain area. The research is aimed at constructing an economic portrait of the potential inbound educational destination a modern Russian medium-sized urban area, which has not yet received a thorough economic study. This purpose is achieved by examining interpretations of the concept of urban areas, by introducing criteria for classifying urban areas (based on the proportion of the share of inhabitants of a certain group of urban areas in the total urban population to the share of urban areas belonging to a certain group in the total number of urban areas) and for qualifying modern Russian urban areas as potential inbound educational destinations (based on the authors conceptual apparatus of educational tourism and a statistical review), as well as by analysing indicators of the economic development of diverse modern Russian medium-sized urban areas that can become inbound educational destinations. The results of the research can be used for working out a strategy for investment in inbound educational tourism.
