DRAGONS OF THE NORTH: THE REINVENTION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN NORWEGIAN BLACK/PAGAN METAL

  • Manea, I. M.
Abstract:
The aim of my contribution is to explore the extent to which the narrative content of several extreme metal bands from Norway valorizes and recycles elements of cultural heritage and memory, embedding them into local discourses with a global appeal. Thematically revolving around a transgressive mixture of Satanism, misanthropy, nihilism, totalitarianism or Neopaganism, the music tried to acquire a cultural capital that would construct an alternative spiritual identity. Notions of a romanticized community and mythologized past produce however an image of Norwegianness. To my mind, music utilizes the mechanisms of inventing tradition and creates the idea of a ‘nation’ by staging conservative worldviews of homogenized heritage, expressed through Norwegian imagery, rural landscapes, mountains, forests in album artwork reminiscent of Norway’s romantic painters, the evocation of folklore and historic tales or simply lexical formulae such as “Norwegian Native Art” (Einherjer 2000). I will be briefly exploring this idea using a critical discourse approach and the concept of cultural and national identity and memory.
