  • Gribovskiy, M. V.
Abstract:
The article is devoted to the characterization of the role that universities played and continue to play in the modernization processes. The universities of the Russian Empire in terms of their participation in the processes of modernization of the country at the turn of the 20th century provided the factual basis for the study. Qualitative renewal of Russia via a capitalist economy and transformation of the political system moving away from autocracy was the central concept of this period. According to the author, Russian universities participated in the modernization process through the professional work of professors and teachers, and also by the social and political activity of both the teaching staff and students. On the one hand, professors and teachers provided progress in various fields of knowledge by undertaking research. On the other hand, the university community (including students), divided the predominantly democratic views, took part in the modernization of the political system of the Russian Empire in the beginning of 20th century. The paper attempts to include the Russian experience of participating universities in the modernization process in the context of the history of European universities.
