Abstract:
Little is known about the political and ecclesiastical history of Walachia at late 15th and early 16th century. A very blurred period during which assassination, treason and perjury seemed to be the ultimate political weapons, the easiest means of getting rid of a rival or of the very enthroned ruler. Nevertheless, the traces of a great prince, Radu the Great, endured, even if the written sources offer very few information. In our paper we wish to cast a new light over the image and prestige that this prince had during his times, both in Walachia and abroad, at Mount Athos or other spaces of the Orthodox Eastern Europe. Iconographical representations from Mount Athos show us a bearer of imperial Byzantine tradition, a reality which is confirmed by his activity as a founder of churches and monasteries, such as Dealu Monastery or the metropolitan church from Targoviste. The special prestige of this ruler can be traced during his successors’ reigns, along the entire 16th century, who invoked his image and lineage as a strategy for legitimating their own ruleship. Such is the case of the more famous Neagoe Basarab. Using the iconographical paintings and the chancelary documents from the 15th and 16th centuries, we intend to reconstruct Radu the Great’s portrait, not only as peaceful political ruler, but especially as a great and prestigious benefactor and reformer of the Church.
