ABSTRACT
The recent tendency to redefine architecture and its role on the social function of space is awaiting for its reflections in the architectural design studio practice to be included in the grounds of the future architects’ design know how. This paper explores this attempt in a design studio case conducted at Gazi University, Department of Architecture, the topic of which was a secondary school design. Throughout the semester the students sought for ways to make a school building and its surrounding site an integral part of the city within the framework provided by Lefebvrean rhythmanalysis of social space where affordances are proposed, produced and experienced. The research outputs of the open-ended questionnaire and final jury records indicate that the students could express ideas on how architecture contributes to social space production, not only for their projects, but also for the educational environments of the schools of architecture.
