ABSTRACT
In this paper I foreground participatory intervention research as an avenue to promote health and well-being in vulnerable school-communities. More specifically, I argue that the key to vulnerable communities taking ownership and addressing the challenges they face lies in strong research partnerships, where university researchers and school-community stakeholders (such as teachers and community volunteers) collaborate. As co-researchers, school-community stakeholders will gradually be required to take the lead in participatory intervention projects, and subsequently function in an independent sustainable manner. Based on this view, I foreground research partnerships and collaboration as protective factor within the broader resilience theory framework. In addition to my focus on methodology as basis for the argument, I link my discussion to strength-based philosophies, as foundation of positive psychology theory. Findings and lessons learned during two broad research projects form the basis of my reasoning, during which I have followed a similar methodological approach yet have involved different stakeholders as participants, over a period of thirteen years.
