ABSTRACT
In recent years, Internet has become widespread throughout the world. By creating a virtual reality, it allows a person to meet at least three main types of needs: communicative, cognitive, playing. Virtual communication is similar in many respects to the real one, though it has its own distinctive characteristics. In the present context, the role of online communication increases where one of its varieties are the group role-playing games. The aim of our research was to study the characteristics of the communication of players in different game chats of MMORPGs. To achieve this, we carried out a qualitative-quantitative analysis of the participants’ chat messages and we also used personality inventories. The study involved 136 people aged from 18 to 34. In total there have been analyzed 1766 chat posts of multiplayer online games. Results of the study showed that group processes in virtual reality are developing by analogy with the real one. In online world as well as in real one there may be conflicts, change of leaders, struggle for power, etc. The results can be used for further study of Internet communication and its impact on the identity of online game players.
