ABSTRACT
The paper describes a research on parent`s involvement in preventing dropout of students from lower secondary school. Dropout issue is analysed within the following approaches: systemic, psychosocial, interactional, external constraints and individual freedom. In this framework, the paradigms we considered were: Bourdieu’s Social and Cultural Reproduction Theory, Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, and J. Epstein`s Overlapping Spheres of Influence Model. The research aimed two objectives: O1 - to identify the parents and teachers perceptions on the importance of parents active involvement in their children school education; O2 - to measure the level of parents satisfaction in relation to school`s social capital. The research hypotheses were: H1- if the partnerships between family and school are active, then the risk of dropping out of school is reduced; H2 – the more concerned the family is about the child school education, the more less the risk of dropping out is. We measured the risk of dropping out school (the dependent variable) by the number of students who were absent without leave (at least six absences per week). The independent variables used were: the family socio-economic status, parent`s active communication with teachers, family involvement in activities within the partnership with the school. The targeted research population were parents and teachers from rural schools. The research strategy was based on questionnaire and interview. Analysing and interpreting the results confirm assumptions.

Keywords: education, school dropout, family, responsibility.
