The model of ethnic identity is a multilayer system where each element is structurally significant and functions as a code sign of this model. The present study is aimed at regarding one of the elements of this code – the concept ‘bread’ in the socio-cultural situation of Eastern Latvia. The region of Eastern Latvia, due to the specifics of the border zone situation, is a multicultural region where several ethnic models have historically coexisted with a constant process of interchange and interrelatedness among them. The concept ‘bread’ is one of the most important universal signs; deciphering its code makes it possible to speak about specific national models and the formation of universal synthetic models.
Bread as an object of study is of special interest as it is related simultaneously to the material and spiritual culture of people. The given concept refers to the most ancient and important spheres in human consciousness and culture, it has an age-long history and great significance in the culture and mentality of any nation.
The methodology of the study is based on an interdisciplinary approach that combines the methods of socio-linguistics and cultural anthropology.
In the course of the scientific study, an associative experiment was carried out among the young people of Latgale with registration of primary replies. One of its tasks was comparing the associative field of Russian-speaking and Latvian-speaking groups of the young people. In the course of the analysis, both everyday life and religious aspects were taken into account.
There were simultaneous studies of perceiving bread as a culture dominant in the context of tourism development and the formation of an image of the mental identity of the region. In this respect the following aspects were regarded: bread as a national souvenir, bread in culture monuments, bread as a ritual product. The bread museum in Aglona became a separate subject of study; it is one of the most frequently visited tourist objects in the region.
The complex linguistic and cultural description of the concept ‘bread’ makes it possible to conclude that bread as a cultural and language constant occupies a central position both in the Latvian and Russian languages. In the mental model, in everyday life, the concept ‘bread’ in constant use is not only related to the sphere of natural life sustenance but also includes a whole range of meanings dictated by the way of life of a person in a multicultural environment.
