Development and formation of the stylistic models of modernist landscapes of the 2nd half of the 20th century is characterized by the shift towards abstract art and towards architecture, which derives the archetypal substance of its elementary forms from simple and clear solutions, using simple natural materials. The characteristic source of its inspiration is the dialogue between international and local, between abstract art and traditional folk art and craft.
The paper discusses the quest for abstract artistic expression and the search for architectural form in the landscape design of the 2nd half of the 20th century in Slovakia, and analyses the sources of its inspiration. It traces the influence of the unique abstract artistic expression of Roberto Burle Marx in the work of Slovak landscape architect Alfonz Torma. The paper through comparison of their drawings, projects and realized works, gives examples of echoing the creative approaches of Roberto Burle Marx in the landscape design of open spaces, gardens, public spaces, parks and squares, by Alfonz Torma.
