ABSTRACT
The text presents an iconographic/iconological analysis of over a dozen parks that have been established in Europe during the last quarter century, starting with the Park of Europe (Vilnius 1991, Lithuania) and ending with the Breathe Austria temporary garden (Expo Milan 2015, Italy). The research comprises three – degree iconographic and iconological studies of plans, sections and pictures of selected objects of landscape architecture that make explicit or metaphorical references to the motif of the forest. The aim of the study conducted according to Erwin Panofsky’s method is to define the symbolic content represented by the motif of the forest in contemporary public spaces, as well as functions that are assigned to them in specific urban locations. In this context the author discusses the ecological and semantic roles of the forests in the Millennium Park and the community Mammoth Park in Wroclaw.

Keywords: the motif of the forest, landscape and garden design, iconological analysis, contemporary parks in Wroclaw (Poland)
