ABSTRACT
I would like to outline the analytical method, which has been used in Poland for just a little more than ten years. I employed this method to study Rachmaninov’s symphonic works in such areas as relations between different areas of construction of his works, motif relations, relations to the prior compositions, forms and styles, biographical relations, inspirations from folk and religious music, painting, biographical and others. I am going to present the definition of intertextuality and explain this method and its elements. Then I will demonstrate intramusical and extramusical (music-literature, painting-music, biographical, cultural) relations. The intertextual method allows to reveal the links between the composer’s works and his/her personal experiences or inspirations. Conclusions drawn in result of such analysis may help not only appreciate the artistry of the composer, but primarily place more accurately the given artist’s music in the broadly understood transformations of culture. Using the intertextual method in my studies I managed to prove that Rachmaninoff was neither an outsider nor an innovator, but a continuator. Thus, the main feature of his artistic output was to be rooted in culture and to appreciate all its manifestations, as his works are an example of evolution rather than a revolution.
