In this work, the creative idea that the artist strives to express in a vanguard work of art is put in juxtaposition to the idea embraced by a viewer with insufficient visual experience of perceiving this type of art. At the first stage of the experiment, the artist provided the description of the principal visual structures that reveal the creative concept of a set of his works, as well as the description of the works’ main ideas. After that, the works in question were shown to the viewers who were asked to describe the principal structural elements and the general idea. The comparison of the resulting data gave grounds for identification and quantitative analysis of the following differences: (1) the loss of meaningful visual structures in perception, (2) misinterpretation of the perceived elements of the image and (3) misreading or distortion of the general idea.
The suggested method is instrumental for determining the approach to popularization of the works of art in question through multimedia (e. g. video or animation). The core of this approach is to direct the attention to the principal conceptual elements of the work and, using various multimedia solutions, to reveal its main idea, taking into account the current understanding of the work by the viewers.
Since the idea of a work of art is always more inclusive than the artist’s creative concept, the multimedia interpretation of artwork can be augmented by certain ideas generated by the viewers, in order to offer a more profound rendition of the artist’s concept.
