THE SOCIOLOGICAL EXPERTISE OF ORGANIZED SCHOOL FEEDING IN ARCTIC REGION

ABSTRACT

The unsatisfactory quality of schoolchildren’s nutrition is one of the main causes of schoolchildren’s illness in Russia. The infant morbidity indicators are exacerbated by the adverse impact of natural-climatic and derived socioeconomic factors of the northern Arctic regions. The main negative factors of Arctic region are: a long winter, polar night, the lack of vitamins, unavailability some health necessary products and the higher prices for them, limited opportunities for the vacation beyond the Arctic region and more expensive living cost in Arctic region at all.
The purpose of the research was to develop and to test the formal model of the sociological expertise of organized school meals. The sociological expertise can be considered as one of the methods for school meals quality control. The main task of sociological expertise is the problems diagnostic capability in organization school meals.
The author’s method of sociological expertise of organized school meals was developed according to the rules for the sociological operationalization the concept “schoolchildren satisfaction with organized school meals”. The result was a system of sociological indicators for diagnostics schoolchildren’s assessments of the organization process and the quality of meal in school dining hall. It includes such indicators as: schoolchildren’s involvement in organized school meals; assessment of quantitative and qualitative food’s parameters; assessment of the dining schedule; assessment of the service culture in the school dining hall; assessment of eating conditions; socioeconomic status of schoolchildren and their families.
The model was tested by the empirical sociological research of schoolchildren’s satisfaction with the organized school meals in town Apatity in Murmansk region. The data collection method was online questioning of schoolchildren from grades 1 through 11. The survey was conducted during the period from April to June 2017 (a sample of 221 people). Data collection was conducted through Google Forms service instrument in Google Docs office suite. The link to the online survey was distributed through school online communities in the Internet, as well as using the "snowball method" (through the system of contacts between schoolchildren, their parents, teachers, school staff). The primary data was exported and subjected to computer processing methods in the software SPSS Base 22.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The main methods of data analysis were statistical methods (frequency, mean, dependencies between variables using the Pearson consensus criterion χ2).
The model of sociological expertise of organized school meals in town Apatity allowed to conclude that schoolchildren are mostly satisfied with the organized school meals, but some problems were also diagnosed by some indicators.
